Active Duty to Auxiliary Transition
One Coast Guard, three branches, working as one.
The Coast Guard has three uniformed branches: the active-duty service, the Coast Guard Reserve, and the all-volunteer Auxiliary. They share a mission. Too often they trained apart and worked apart.
As operations officer of the Yaquina Bay flotilla, I advocated for a change in culture among them: streamlined training, and a working partnership that makes all three more effective on the water — including a path for active-duty members to carry their skills into the Auxiliary.
The policy changes reached all three branches. In 2015 the Commandant of the Coast Guard recognized the proposal with the CDR Joel Magnussen Innovation Award for Cultural Change.
