Securing a $6,000 Military-Pay Tax Deduction for Oregon Service Members
One of my legislative accomplishments was helping secure an increase in Oregon’s military-pay income-tax subtraction from $3,000 to $6,000 annually for qualifying National Guard members and military reservists.
As founder and executive director of the Oregon War Veterans Association, I developed and advocated for HB 3202 (2007), which proposed increasing the military-pay tax benefit. I also advanced HB 3201 (2007), a broader veterans’ tax-relief measure introduced at the request of OWVA.
During negotiations in the Legislature’s revenue committee, I helped secure agreement to incorporate the military-pay provision into other legislation rather than advancing it solely through HB 3202.
The resulting legislation allowed qualifying service members to subtract up to $6,000 of eligible military pay from their Oregon taxable income.
This was one of the many legislative efforts I led to deliver practical, lasting financial benefits to Oregon’s military families.
