Thesis statement

Theologians employ models to facilitate understanding of corresponding theoretical concepts. Models, however, are finite and subject to periodic evaluation. As theologians consider their changing cultural environments, some traditional models necessarily become antiquated and vague, thus losing their value.

After investigating theoretical model definitions, functions and qualities, I intend to examine the ancient trichotomous and traditional dichotomous models in Christian anthropology. I shall subsequently introduce and validate a more functional model, one which I have termed the neo-trichotomous model. Finally, the traditional dichotomous and the neo-trichotomous models will be comparatively analyzed in correlation with five principle Christian doctrines: sin, redemption, sanctification, Image of God, and the Incarnation of Jesus Christ.

Why it is here

This is where the argument started. It was typed in 1987, defended before the faculty of the Intensified Studies Program at George Fox College, and printed and shelved in the college library, where it has stood since. It is reproduced here as it was written, unedited.

The five doctrines it tests — sin, redemption, sanctification, the image of God, and the Incarnation — are the same five carried forward into the 2026 paper, which is where the model now stands. Where the two differ, the later one is the position I hold. This one is kept for the record, and for anyone who wants to see the case in the form it was first made.

A note on the scan

Reproduced from the original typescript. A searchable text layer has been added so the document can be found, quoted and read aloud; an old mailing label on the title page has been removed. Nothing in the text is altered.
